Lake Tsomori
Situated in the picturesquely secluded, breathtakingly beautiful Roopshu Valley, the high altitude Tso Moriri Lake is 250 km southeast of Leh. Surrounded by high mountains, this serene lake is about 4,000 meters above sea level. Tso Moriri is approximately 29 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. Tso Moriri attracts a range of wildlife, including migratory birds, marmots and rarely, Tibetan wolves.
so Moriri Lake in the Changthang region of Ladakh is one of the most beautiful, serene and sacred (for Ladakhis) high altitude lakes in India. In fact, it is the highest altitude lake in India that is entirely within Indian territory. This beautiful blue palette lake is about 7 KM wide and about 19 KM long at its widest point. Being part of the Wetland Reserve under the Ramsar site, it is known as the Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve in actuality and one cannot pitch tents or build anything along the lake. It is the highest Ramsar site in the world. A large number of flora and fauna are found in this area. Since, it is very close to the Line of Actual Control, one needs to obtain an Inner Line Permit to visit Tso Moriri.
The beautiful multi shades of blue offered by this lake and the picturesque landscapes around give this place an extremely romantic feel and breathtaking feeling. However, in actual reality this place is extremely harsh and it is difficult to survive especially in winters. Only one pucca dwelling is available around the lake and facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilet etc. are scarce. If your body is not properly accustomed to its altitude, the lack of oxygen makes it difficult to survive and hence, one needs to plan your travel extremely carefully to make it an acute mountain sickness free vacation.
From January to March, Tso Moriri lives mostly in frozen, extremely cold conditions with no choice but to stay around Lake Moriri. In the April types, it begins to melt and turn into beautiful multi-shades of blue, off the shores. Then May, June, July and August are the peak season of tourism but the number of tourists is less here as compared to Pangong Tso.
